Maxfund’s Mission Met: A Look Back at 2025

As we turn the page on the first month of 2026, we wanted to take a look back at all of the amazing ways our staff, volunteers, supporters, and community lived out the MaxFund Mission. Here's a recap of all the amazing, lifesaving work we were able to accomplish together.

A Strong Start: Operation LA Wildfire Transfers

The year 2025 was a big one for MaxFund in many ways, and we believe the first month may have set the bar pretty high. Thankfully, our impassioned community showed up ten-fold for the needy animals of Colorado and beyond.

You may remember at the top of last year; the Los Angeles/Palisades communities of California were heavily impacted by a rapidly on-setting and growing wildfire down the coast. As Coloradans, we're all familiar with how quickly a fire can become a threat to a community. We were fortunate enough to send our air-conditioned RV, equipped with kennels and veterinary staff ready to provide aid to those shelters impacted by this fire. Together, we were able to rescue at-risk animals, who didn't have a home to begin with, and they have thankfully all been adopted.

The Passing of CPOF (HB-1137)

Marching along into March, we saw historic wins in the world of animal welfare, namely the passing of CPOF (HB-1137). The passing of this bill opened the doors wider for Colorado rescues and shelters by broadening the funding for TNR programs to higher risk communities. The bill went on to be passed fully in a Senate vote!

As an organization so heavily and directly involved in animal welfare, we pride ourselves in working to forward the no-kill movement through community advocacy and maximizing programs that strengthen care Colorado's needy animals will receive.

This passing has a huge impact on Colorado's needy animal population. HB 1137 increased the number of shelters and rescues that would receive funding for TNR programs, broadened the diversity on the board that decides which organizations would receive that funding, and put in place measures to prevent funding from being allocated due to bias. The bill also enshrined the fund's practice of awarding 70% of grants annually to organizations in rural areas, which are often overlooked. We are so grateful to have been able to make a difference for those impacted!

Next with Kyle Clark: Word of Thanks

The summer sun began to shine, and the first ray hit MaxFund! Back in June of last year, we were selected by Kyle Clark and his incredible team as a feature nonprofit for Next with Kyle Clark's Word of Thanks micro-giving campaign. In just a few weeks, we received an outpouring of support from the Colorado community, seeing over $100,000 donated towards this campaign. We couldn't be more grateful to Kyle and the 9News team for not only platforming our mission and uplifting the No Kill movement even further, but also their continued support through, like the Friday Furcast features Chris Bianchi includes in his weather updates on 9News. We are so honored they've chosen to support MaxFund.

Top Dog at Top Golf

Like year's prior, in July we hosted many of our friends, supporters, and community members for a driving range fundraiser at Top Golf. Teams came together for a little friendly golf competition in support of the No-Kill mission. At the event, guests enjoyed a buffet-style taco bar, the chance to enter a raffle for incredible prizes donated by businesses and community partners, and tried their hand at holes in one for the cause.

This year, we're excited to announce that we're doing things a little differently. Introducing, our inaugural 18-hole golf fundraiser: Fore the Animals! We're lucky enough to work with Cherry Creek Country Club to host this event in style. The competition will feature banquet-style dining, including a breakfast complete with a Bloody Mary Bar, a luncheon and award ceremony. More details to come, check out the initial elements of this event on the official website, and snag your team's spot while there's still time.

Punk Rock Saves Lives: A Day with KsE and I Prevail

In August, one lucky dog got the chance to experience something not many humans have even had the chance to say they've done. When the team behind Killswitch Engage and I Prevail's participation in the Summer of Loud tour reached out to us with interest in collaborating, we knew just what to do.

We were grateful to show the band members and their tour teams around our facilities. The Venn diagram of animal lovers and metal music fans is a circle, so it was no surprise that all of the band members were completely taken with the adorable animals in our shelters. Then later, one of our adoptable dogs, Blaze, got an extraordinary experience. Blaze got what many fans dream of; he got to spend time with the musicians enjoying pup-cups on that summer day and even got backstage passes before the show. The outpouring of support the teams showed our mission was astounding, featuring us on their social media, taking photos with staff, and KsE singer Jesse Leach even demonstrated his infamous "scream."

The Annual MaxFund Gala: Maskpawrade

As quickly as the summer flew by, the annual gala approached. Our pinnacle fundraising event every year, last year's event really knocked it out of the park. As in years past, we hosted the annual event at the Four Seasons Hotel of Denver. The event featured an open bar, an immaculate and expansive auction, a four-course fine dining experience, and exclusive to this rendition of the event, live Phantom of the Opera-inspired performances.

We truly can't thank those who made this event possible enough. With their support the 2025 MaxFund Gala fundraiser took the title of highest amount fundraised for our non-profit mission. We're eager to put those donations to work to forward our mission, proceeds going directly towards the shelter and care of Colorado's most vulnerable dogs and cats.

Wrapping up 2025: End of Year Giving

We ended the year 2025 with a bang, fundraising style! This winter, we were so thankful for the outpouring of support our community offered. Whether you were an individual who donated to our Colorado Gives Day Portal, a business who hosted a MaxFund Giving Tree, or an incredible Donor to our No Empty Bowls Community Pet Pantry, we are eternally grateful for your generosity. You showed up for not only MaxFund's needy animals, but also your fellow community members during their time of need. The participation these campaigns saw this winter was awe-inspiring. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your contributions, you truly showed us what the MaxFund mission means to you.

Looking into 2026: A Year of Many Changes

In 2025, you all adopted animals from our shelters at record numbers. You fundraised creatively, and competitively. You volunteered to support even our more outlandish projects. You showed up for the lifesaving MaxFund mission. 2025 will be tough to beat but know this: MaxFund Animal Adoption Center is changing for the better. We make you this promise: Our mission is the same, even if other aspects of what we do look different. We will continue to challenge lawmakers to platform animal wellness; we will strive to give Colorado's most vulnerable animals a second chance at finding their true companions, regardless of the level of care they require. The MaxFund mission persists in 2026.

A Letter to my Fosters: from MaxFund's Cat Foster Coordinator

Dear Cat and Kitten fosters of MaxFund,

I adore you. You foster for MaxFund, but I often think of you as MY fosters. I have so much admiration and respect for you. You are cat mom, cat dad, cat sister, cat brother. You are family...to the felines, to MaxFund, to me.

My Hospice Fosters... You open your heart and home not knowing if you will have a beloved cat for a day or a year. You engage with them as if each day is their first and not perhaps their last. You are hypervigilant with their care. You open your hearts wide. You don't hold back your love. You give them a home. You give them a family. You ensure they feel wanted and not discarded. Do you have any idea how much that means to the cat?  Do you have any idea how much that means to me, to MaxFund? When the time comes for these precious beings to cross the Rainbow Bridge, you show up for them. You are present, continuing to love them as they leave this world. What a selfless gift you give them.

My Kitten Fosters... I never tire of telling interested adopters about you. The kittens in our Kitten Room post- spay/neuter are loving and socialized because of you. You teach them manners and help them build confidence. You engage them in various kinds of play developing their motor skills. You love them. You care for them. Kittens often learn that if they want to be held and cuddled, all they must do is scream non-stop. You spoil them and it shows! Some of you had pregnant mamas with difficult births where one or more kittens didn't make it. Some of you had kittens in your care who, sadly, didn't survive long after birth. You care for them all as if they were your own. You emotionally invest without hesitation.

The heartbreaking part of fostering is, at times, the precious animals are called to cross the Rainbow Bridge. It's personal, it's so personal. We cry. We mourn their passing. I care about the animals and I care about you, my dear Fosters. I don't want you to be sad, yet I know it's inevitable when a cat or kitten passes away. Every single time I am right there grieving with you.

Fosters, you are awesome! You are awe-inspiring! We are in this together - you and me and MaxFund and the cats and kittens that come to us and then go to you and eventually to their adoptive home. The good times. The funny times. The uncertain times. The scary times. The sad times. My heart swells with love and gratitude for each and every one of you. We laugh. We cry both happy and sad tears. We gasp – how can such tiny kittens make such a mess as they're learning how to use the litter box? We chuckle. We cringe - cat and kitten poops are no joke sometimes.

Just as each of the cats and/or kittens you have fostered carry a part of you with them their entire lives, I carry a part of you with me. Your levels of dedication and compassion are exemplary. Quite simply and honestly...it is beyond words. You don't hold back. You love. Oh how you love! Deeply. You love because it's what these innocent, meaningful lives deserve. You love because it's who you are. I feel like we are family. I feel like you are all my friends and my family. Yes, we are in this together!

The cats and kittens are furry treasures who are blessed to be in your care temporarily and you, too, are treasures. You are pure gold – solid, exquisite, so very valuable. There will never be enough words to properly express how grateful I am for you, thank you!

With deepest gratitude,

your Cat Foster Coordinator,

Shelly

Endless Ways to Impact Colorado’s Animals: Volunteering 101 with MaxFund

If you've been wanting to get involved in animal welfare but aren't sure where to start, you've come to the right place. There are so many ways to volunteer and make a direct impact on the lives of Colorado's needy, injured, and abandoned animals. In this blog, we'll uncover the variety of ways you can use your skills towards the MaxFund mission, the benefits of volunteering on both humans and animals, and how to get involved with the MaxFund volunteer program today!

Being a MaxFund Volunteer Looks Different for Everyone
Whether you're a dog or cat person, crafty or active, introverted or extroverted, there are so many ways you can use your unique skillset to benefit the lives of MaxFund residents. Let's first discuss what the typical volunteer opportunity with MaxFund looks like.

The Most Popular Avenue to Volunteering: Enrichment and Play
One of the most popular and needed types of volunteers is the playful kind. This type of volunteer is on-site at MaxFund in either the Dog or Cat Shelter, providing adoptable animals with further enrichment outside of what is already provided by the kennel professionals. Whether that's through standard play techniques, walks, or cuddle time, any and all efforts to enrich the lives of our residents helps to prepare them for their departure to spend the rest of their lives with their true companion. But, while this may be the most popular and necessary avenue, it is not the only beneficial volunteer opportunity we're happy to accept.

Unique Ways to Volunteer: Long-term Opportunities
After you've spent time familiarizing yourself with MaxFund's programs, animals, and values, it's possible to get involved in other ways. Take, for example, Kennel Tech and Volunteer Laura Baker's experience hiking with some of our resident adoptable dogs:

"Have you ever thought about taking one of our dogs out for a field trip? I'm a kennel tech at the dog shelter and I LOVE picking dogs who I think might especially enjoy a trip to the mountains for a hike, which I did today with Sparky!

If you've logged 50 or more hours volunteering with us at the dog shelter, I highly encourage you to pick a dog and take them out for an excursion! Be thoughtful about choosing a dog you know well and pick an activity that they will be happy doing. You will fill out a quick form detailing where you're going and what time you'll return, then get a few quick sign-offs from management and a vet tech before you can be on your way!

I mean....look how much joy it can bring them to get out and see the world beyond MaxFund! Sparky and I had a ton of fun and we got to practice some good manners, too! He's such a smarty pants and just the BEST boy!"

Outside of a great Colorado expedition, many of our other long-term volunteers provide expert services as a way to bring further awareness to our mission and the animals it serves. Some of our current volunteers offer services like photography for adoption profiles, writing for our newsletter, making blankets for our animals to relax with, some even going as far as aiding in the transfer of animals to escape euthanasia or worse conditions.

Other Ways to Get Involved: Group Volunteering
Grab your family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and organize your next get together as a day of service at MaxFund. Help us with many needed projects across our campus and make a maximum impact as a way to bond with your crew! Options for corporate groups available, contact Volunteer Program Manager Carrie for more information.

What it Takes to Become a MaxFund Volunteer
Volunteering at MaxFund is such an engaging opportunity not only for humans, but also for the animals here. To volunteer with MaxFund, we require certain qualifications of our applicants. First, the minimum age and hourly commitment. To volunteer at the cat shelter, you must be at least 9 years old, and volunteers from 9-15 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also required to go through the volunteer application process. Additionally, in order to remain an active volunteer for MaxFund, we ask that individuals commit to a minimum of 4 hours a month for 6 months. Now, let's talk about the application process.

How to Apply to Volunteer with MaxFund
Applying to be a MaxFund Volunteer is easy! Simply fill out this form. After completing the form and passing a background check for safety purposes, new volunteers will take a 2.5 hour long orientation session with a mentor. This training contains necessary information about MaxFund's operations, pet handling, safety, and protocols that are vital to your success as a volunteer here. Then, you're ready to begin your journey as a MaxFund volunteer!

An Animal Lover's Favorite Pass time: Volunteerism
Volunteering with MaxFund is the perfect way to further your commitment to animal welfare and the No Kill mission.
August Fund-A-Needs: Tink and Livi

As the leading, true No Kill shelter in Denver, we are often the caregivers of animals that otherwise would've face a worser fate.

This month, we're fundraising for two special animals, one cat and one dog: Tink and Livi. Our mission is a promise to the animals we shelter and care for: to give them the best possible life we can provide, regardless of the level of care they require. Our intention with fundraising for both Tiki and Livi this month, is to do just that.

Both of these animals have needs that we feel grateful to be able to address due to the impassioned commitment of our supporters. Donations to either fundraiser will offset the cost to us as a nonprofit organization to continue to provide them with a safe place to await their true companions and recuperate following necessary treatment. Read the blog below to learn more about Tink and Livi, their resilience, their needs, and the impact they've had on our community of volunteers and staff.
Tink: A Magical Addition to MaxFund and a Staff/Volunteer Favorite
Those who have been to the Cat Shelter know that inside of these four walls, there's a little bit of magic. Not the magic of a kitten's mew or the making of a biscuit, but that of Tink's sweet hums and loving eyes. This month, we're raising funds for Tink's daily care needs.

Tink's Intake:
When Tink was relinquished to MaxFund at no fault of her own in January of this year, it was very clear to our team that something was different about her. We initially thought Tink had something we affectionately call "Wobbly Cat" syndrome, also known as cerebellar hypoplasia or CH for short. This condition causes the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination, to remain underdeveloped. Cats who are diagnosed with CH often have difficulty with walking, eating, and other mobility skills.

Tink's Current Condition
However, our team has since ruled out CH, because of Tink's unique independence. See, Tink has made incredible progress in her weekly PT sessions. Unlike many other cats with CH, Tink is to be able to hold her head up while eating and can eat, drink, and use her litterbox on her own. She still struggles with mobility, so these tasks do remain difficult for her, but has been showing improvement with the support she has received so far. Our expert kennel and veterinary staff suspect because of the way her mobility continues to improve, her likely diagnosis is more aligned with neurological abnormalities and possible congenital issues.

All about Tink:
Despite her condition, Tink leads a very full life. She is the most sweet and loving cat to grace this building, and (shhhh) a staff and volunteer favorite. She most enjoys her time in her sling or stroller, getting to meet all of the amazing people on MaxFund's campus. She's also a very social kitty, wooing anyone who passes by with her sweet voice. She loves making friends! Here's what one volunteer had to say about her:

Volunteer Nicole writes, " Tink doesn't let her disability slow her down. She adores cuddle time, loves curling up on laps, and melts hearts with her soft, sweet little voice as she "talks" to you. Playtime and Churu treats are among her absolute favorites, and she never misses a chance to show her gratitude for love and attention.

Tink is living proof that with patience, care, and determination, anything is possible—and she's ready to share her joy, resilience, and cuddles with everyone who meets her."

To donate to Tink's ongoing care needs, visit this link.

Livi: A Valiant Lady who Needs Arthroscopic Surgery
Since her arrival to us as a puppy in December of last year, Livi has shown us that she is friendly and playful, never missing her chance for a round of fetch. This gorgeous girl loves to explore, whether that's a park, a body of water, or a backyard, she is curious about everything. As equally as she fancies a jaunt outside in the wilderness, Livi enjoys curling up next to you on the couch to watch your favorite movie.

Livi's Surgical Needs
On top of her zest for life, however, we discovered that Livi has medical issues that inhibit her from living her full happy-go-lucky lifestyle. Livi was diagnosed with hydronephrosis, which means she suffers from blockages in her urinary tract that cause swelling of the kidney. Livi is scheduled to receive surgery for urinary incontinence issues, of which is the best care we can provide her with: arthroscopic surgery.

This type of surgery involved a minimally invasive approach where a small tube-like scope, or arthroscope, is inserted to address the problem area. The scope contains a small camera and light source which will allow our team to assess the extent of her condition and treat it without causing too much distress or requiring a significant amount of recovery for our active girl. This procedure should allow Livi to lead a normal life post recovery!

Money donated on Livi's behalf will go directly to her surgery needs, offsetting the cost to our nonprofit organization to be able to provide her with the care she needs to resume her normal active life and assume the best shape while she awaits her true companions.

To donate towards Livi's surgery costs and recovery needs, visit this link.

A Moment of Gratitude for our Supporters
Looking back on our last few Fund-A-Need campaigns to support the needs of our MaxFund animals, we can't help but feel so grateful for the unwavering support of our committed donors, volunteers, and friends, Denver and beyond. If it weren't for individuals like you, our ability to provide these animals with the shelter, care, and love they need to thrive would wither. So, thank you for everything you do to enrich the lives of those who need it most! MaxFund would be nothing without you.

TK's Medical Fund-A-Need: Our Loverboy

Meeting TK, it is evident that this sweet 6-year-old terrier pit mix has yet to meet someone he doesn't immediately love. Originally joining us at MaxFund on Valentine's Day, this loverboy is known around the shelter for carrying his toy bone on walks, showing it off proudly to anyone who crosses paths with them.

Bubbly and Affectionate Personality

TK is known as the shelter sweetheart. As much as he loves parading his toys, especially his stuffy ones, around on his walks, this gentle soul prioritizes relaxation. In short, he's a cuddle bug! Any chance he can get to curl up next to his favorite humans he will take. And despite the irritation from his allergies, he loves to receive and give affection. Belly rub fan number one!

Special Care Needs

TK's introduction to MaxFund has had its fair share of obstacles. Shortly after his intake, our dedicated shelter staff discovered TK has some pretty intense allergies that inhibit him from maintaining a standard diet. Daily, TK receives multiple oral medications, medicated baths, foot soaks, and specialized food. With his diet and his allergies closely managed, it's clear nothing can break TK's tough spirit.

Inspiring Through his Adversity

Today, TK is a shining example for all the animals who come through MaxFund's doors with nowhere else to turn. In spite of his ongoing care needs, TK remains optimistic and heart-first with everyone lucky enough to meet him.

It is MaxFund's impassioned mission to give every animal a second chance at life, especially those with complex medical cases. Our nonprofit organization assumes all the medical expenses associated with these animals because we believe there is no dollar amount that can be placed on saving a life.

If you're looking to add some extra love and loyalty into your life, consider meeting TK. Or, consider donating towards his medical Fund-a-need today.

What Do You Know About Parvo? A Guide to Preventing Canine Parvovirus

What is Parvovirus?

Canine parvovirus, aka Parvo for short, is one of the most highly contagious and serious gastrointestinal diseases that affects dogs, particularly puppies. April is Parvo Awareness month because much like other viral diseases, Parvovirus spikes in late spring and early summer.

How does Parvo Spread?

Parvovirus spreads virally, which means that it is passed from pup to pup through contact with infected fecal matter, or dog poop. Dogs most frequently catch Parvovirus through contact with in unmonitored, highly trafficked areas like dog parks and trails.

What are The Symptoms of Parvo?

Parvovirus is a gastrointestinal disease, so symptoms present themselves through a change in bowel movements, as well as other activity and mobility symptoms. The most obvious symptoms of parvovirus are vomiting and diarrhea. More serious cases can be indicated through the foul smell of bowel movements as well as blood in diarrhea.

You may also notice your pup getting more tired, less motivated to play, more lethargic. Your pup may also experience a fever, loss of appetite, dehydration, weakness and joint pain.

Can Cats get Parvo?

While cats cannot get Parvo from dogs, it is possible for them to get a similar virus specific to cats called feline panleukopenia (FPV). FPV is spread in the same way as Parvovirus, through contact with infected feline fecal matter, and presents with the same symptoms.

How Can You Prevent Parvo?

To prevent the spread of FPV and Parvo, keep your animal out of areas like parks or any other areas where you may be unsure of the health and vaccination status of other present animals. It's important that pet owners ensure the safety of their furry friends by vaccinating them against these highly infectious and potentially fatal diseases.

Does MaxFund offer Parvo Prevention?

Yes! MaxFund offers a series of vaccines for common viral diseases that could affect your pet, including Parvo. The series are given over the course of the first 16 weeks of your pet's life. Until your puppy is vaccinated, they are not protected from Parvovirus. For more information on protecting your pet from FPV or Parvovirus, visit our Clinic page or contact us at 303-595-0532.

MaxFund's Mission: Pet Care Over Profit

A cornerstone of the MaxFund mission is putting the care and love for animals above profit, regardless of the situation. We are so grateful for our amazing community of supporters that help us remain able to care for any animal that comes through our doors to the best of our ability. All that said, we do continue to find the need to rely on our community as some of our residents have more needs than others.

April's Goal: Offset MaxFund's Cost To Continue to Provide This Care

Meet Kelly & Guapo. This bonded, partially paralyzed pair of kitties has been with us for years, and we feel lucky to be able to care for them every day while they await their forever home. You can imagine it's pretty difficult to adopt a cat with such specialized needs, much less two!

An Interview with Kelly & Guapo's Support System: Katie Cook

In the meantime, however, one of our staff members has taken a significant liking to these two spry boys. Katie Cook, one of Meow Manor's resident cat caretakers, has been caring for Kelly & Guapo for more than 3 years now. We sat down with her to learn more about this amazing duo, here's what she had to say:

Tell me about your connection with these kitties! How long have you known them? What's your favorite part about caring for them? What do you wish more people knew about them?

I've known Kelly and Guapo for as long as I've been here, which was four years in March of 2025. I've taken care of them for about three years of that, beginning at the shelter before Meow Manor was built. When I moved over to MM, I took them with me out of deep love and admiration of them.

My favorite part of caring for them is our cuddle time and our play time. Kelly has more feeling in his lower extremities and is my favorite (but don't tell Guapo!). Once I lie down on the floor, he'll slink up next to me and purr and purr and purr while I love all over him. Once I'm done with Kelly, I move over to Guapo who just wants his head petted and scratched. He rewards you with making biscuits on whatever he has available...I've seen him give the air above him biscuits. Guapo doesn't feel as much in his lower extremities as Kelly, but I would argue that he feels a lot more than other "paralyzed" cats do! I've seen him get up on all four legs and take a couple steps towards running when he's afraid; I've seen him lift his legs up to help me when I'm bathing him; and I've seen his legs twitch a little bit before he goes potty.

I wish other people saw Kelly and Guapo just like they see other cats. These boys are resilient and either have no idea that they are "different" from other cats or don't care.

One of the cats was found stray while the other was relinquished. How did the two of them end up being connected and ultimately bonding?

Kelly arrived first with hip dysplasia and was incontinence. When Guapo arrived later, he was paralyzed and incontinence. It made sense to put the two of them together to see how they did. They hit it off immediately. In fact, Kelly took on more of a "big brother" role and always made sure Guapo was safe.

I think maybe they saw a part of themselves in each other and loved each other all the more because of it. Once they lived together, they did not like to be separated (even for a necessary doctor appointment!). They will cry to me as I approach the room, as if to say, "where's my buddy? He should be here with me!"

Consider Donating to Our Cause Today

We hope this glimpse into Kelly and Guapo's life, as well as this inside look with their care team has helped to illustrate exactly why we love caring for this bonded pair so much.
A Beginner's Guide for Your First Catio

A Beginner's Guide for Your First Catio

What is a Catio?

Essentially, a catio is exactly what it sounds like: a combination of "cat" and "patio." It's an enclosed outdoor space specifically designed to let cats safely enjoy the outdoors. These structures can be attached to a window, porch, or even stand alone, providing a secure environment where cats can experience fresh air and stimulation without the risks associated with free-roaming.

Why Build a Catio?

Health Benefits

Catios offer a safe outdoor environment where our feline friends can engage in physical exercise and mental stimulation. Exposure to natural sunlight helps regulate their circadian rhythms, ensuring better sleep patterns and overall mood enhancement. Fresh air can improve respiratory health, while exercise in an outdoor setting encourages natural behaviors such as hunting, climbing, and exploring.

Studies show that these activities are not only physically beneficial but also crucial for mental stimulation, reducing the risk of behavioral issues that can arise from indoor confinement. Allowing your cat to safely experience the outdoors through a catio can significantly enhance their quality of life.

Physical Exercise: Catios encourage your cat to move, climb, and explore, promoting physical fitness.

Mental Stimulation: The sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors provide mental enrichment.

Stress Reduction: Access to a catio can reduce anxiety and stress, leading to a happier cat.

Safety Benefits

Catios Offer cats the best of both worlds by providing a safe indoor/outdoor lifestyle, allowing cats to enjoy the outdoors without facing the risks that outdoor cats encounter. According to a study, indoor cats live an average of 10 to 15 years, whereas outdoor cats typically live only 2 to 5 years due to outside dangers.

Designed with safety in mind, catios protect your cat from outdoor hazards such as predators, traffic accidents, and encounters with stray or feral cats. They also prevent escapes, ensuring your cat won't wander off or get lost. Additionally, catios help preserve local wildlife by keeping your cat contained, preventing them from hunting and disrupting the natural ecosystem.

Predator Protection: Catios provide a secure outdoor space, protecting your cat from predators, diseases, encounters with feral/stray cats, and traffic hazards.

Preventing Escapes: A catio ensures your cat stays contained, preventing them from wandering off or getting lost.
Environmental Protection: By keeping your cat contained, catios help protect local wildlife from being hunted.

Planning Your Catio

Assess Your Space

When assessing your space for a catio, select a window where you can easily install a cat flap, allowing your cat to enter and exit the catio at their convenience. Choose a location that offers a good view for your cat, letting them comfortably observe their surroundings. Additionally, consider areas that receive adequate sunlight and have a solid foundation for stability and safety.

When considering the size of your catio, take into account the size of your cat and how much space they need to roam and play comfortably. We recommend providing at least 10 square feet of space per cat to ensure they have enough room, preventing the area from becoming crowded, especially if you have multiple cats. Consider your cat's activity level; if you own very active cats, you may need a larger catio to allow them ample space to run around and stay engaged. Providing sufficient space helps maintain a healthy and stimulating environment for your feline friends.

Materials and Construction

Choosing Durable Materials: When planning your catio, selecting the right materials is crucial to ensure longevity and safety. Opt for weather-resistant materials like treated wood, metal, or PVC to withstand various weather conditions and prevent deterioration. Additionally, use sturdy mesh or wire for the enclosure to keep your cat secure while allowing them to enjoy the fresh air and view.

Building a Sturdy Structure: Constructing a solid foundation and framework for your catio is essential for stability and safety. Ensure that the base is level and secure, and reinforce the structure with strong joints and supports. This will not only provide a safe environment for your cat but also ensure the catio withstands the test of time and elements.

Safety Considerations: Pay close attention to the safety aspects of your catio design. Avoid using toxic materials and ensure there are no sharp edges or small gaps where your cat could get injured or escape. Incorporate safe entry and exit points that are easy for both you and your cat to use.

Building a catio is a fantastic way to provide your feline friend with a safe and enriching outdoor experience. By carefully planning the location, size, materials, and construction, you can create a secure and stimulating environment that benefits both your cat's health and the local wildlife. Start your catio project today and watch your cat thrive in their new outdoor haven!

----------------

References:

de Assis, L.
Saving Nevaeh - May 2024 Fund-A-Need

Saving Nevaeh - May 2024 Fund-A-Need
The story of 9-month-old puppy's miracle...

In mid-April 2024, on an otherwise normal day, a 9-month-old German Shepherd was found abandoned and immobilized in the middle of a busy street outside of Denver, CO. A good Samaritan watched with bated breath as countless cars sped by while he tried to find a way to save her, and ultimately stopped traffic to scoop her up into his truck. This was just the first of many obstacles the puppy would soon face.

She was barely responsive. Weak, clinging to shallow breaths and lethargic, shaky movements; it was clear that something was severely wrong with her health. She was brought to MaxFund on April 16th, 2024, without so much as a name or collar. The gentleman who saved her decided she should be called "Nevaeh, because she is going to need a miracle from Heaven."

Upon intake, our veterinary technicians noted everything her small, frail body was battling to stay alive; signs of distress in her heart and blood pressure, neurological screenings, and a painful, swollen abdomen. Her tests showed a severe case of Parvovirus--one of the most dangerous illnesses for young dogs, which requires intensive emergency treatment.

Nevaeh was closely monitored day-in and day-out, keeping an eye on her vitals and responses to medication and fluids throughout 24-hour supervision.

After nearly a week of hope from the MaxFund community, Nevaeh seemed to be getting her miracle. For the first time in our care, she was slowly starting to wag her tail, gaining back an appetite. Her story today is far from over, as she is working hard with MaxFund's dedicated veterinary team to overcome the many health risks brought on by her critical condition.

Today, Nevaeh is a beacon of hope for all the animals who come through MaxFund's doors with nowhere else to turn. Without our tireless efforts to support her journey, Nevaeh's life would have come to a tragic and unwarranted end. It is MaxFund's impassioned mission to give every animal a second chance at life, especially those with complex medical cases. Our nonprofit organization assumes all the medical expenses associated with these animals because we believe there is no dollar amount that can be placed on saving a life.

Any contributions toward Nevaeh's heartwarming health journey, and other MaxFund medical cases, are greatly appreciated to offset the costs of expensive medical care.

Without our generous donors, this mission would not be possible. We thank you for your help in saving the lives of countless abandoned animals throughout the Rocky Mountain Region.

Donate Today
Scan the QR code or click this link to donate to Nevaeh
MaxFund is grateful for your continued support of our mission in giving every animal a second chance at life.

HOPE FOR HARLOW
585 days – over 19 months. That's how long Harlow has been in our care. In that time, she watched as every other cat in her room left for their forever homes. Harlow sees the adopters excitedly pick up their cat, while she is left behind – again and again. Harlow has been returned TWICE, through no fault of her own-- each time, her humans moved and didn't take her with them. She was last dropped off 11/21/22. Her humans told her they were just going on vacation and soon, they'd be back for her. She kept waiting, looking out the window for them and hoping... but they never showed. Harlow wondered, "Did I something do wrong?" Her shelter friends assured her she did not. This gal is trying her best to remain upbeat and positive, but we can see she is getting depressed.

Why does Harlow get overlooked? Well, this elegant mini-panther lady with sultry green eyes is neither shy nor flashy, so she may not immediately catch your eye. Instead, she's that perfect "Goldilocks" cat: a loving, sweet, nine years young "lap cat," who will curl up with you and love to be pet. When not in your lap, she'll perch on her cat tower, enjoying the sun while looking at birds, squirrels, anything passing by. She meows a little, not a lot.

She will require very little while giving you back much joy & comfort. While she does need to be your only cat, she lived very easily with a cat-friendly dog & would do fine with kids 5+ !

Harlow has diabetes, which is not hard to manage. She gets insulin shots twice/ day; they do not hurt her and she tolerates them easily. Our Vet Staff will walk you through every step!

Won't you please give this girl, who has waited so long for her fur-ever home, a chance?

Call or visit our shelter today to meet Harlow, she will be waiting for you to fall in love!

Colorado Rescue Act (Featuring Big Handsome)

Colorado Rescue Act (Featuring Big Handsome)

Big Handsome is an appropriately named red-brindle mastiff mix from a shelter in Oklahoma. When his shelter ran out of space but was still required to take more incoming dogs, Big Handsome was placed on a list to be terminated even though he was a healthy and well-behaved dog. Luckily, Big Handsome was also put on a list of dogs that could be transferred to other shelters that had available space to take them.

At MaxFund No Kill shelter we do our best to save and treat all kinds of cats and dogs. Animal rescue is a community that extends far beyond MaxFund, and for any number of reasons, not all shelters operate as No Kill shelters. Some shelters are municipal shelters that must admit all incoming animals. Some shelters must maintain a certain amount of available kennel space for city animal control contracts and funding. Kennel space, funding, even proximity to and availability of veterinary and training staff can all influence how different animal shelters and rescues operate.

Overall, though, we have the same basic objective: we are trying to save animals. Sadly, some shelters and their animals still run out of options. Demand for shelter space is extremely high and some shelters are required to make space any way possible. In some instances, healthy animals are put on a "kill list" simply because they were not adopted before more animals came into the shelter. MaxFund helps these animals and shelters when we can. We understand that some good dogs and cats simply take more time for the right home to find them. MaxFund reached out to Big Handsome's shelter in Oklahoma, and he was transferred to MaxFund. Big Handsome is a very sweet, although strong and boisterous, big dog who is a well-behaved walker with the MaxFund staff.

Several other current MaxFund guests are also transfers from similar lists at other shelters. Dogs like our goofy Charlie Brown and playful Caboose were transferred from overcrowded, rural Colorado shelters that wanted to avoid terminating healthy dogs for lack of space. Animal rescues everywhere are at capacity, and try as we might, no single shelter can save every pet. What we can do is encourage cooperation and communication among shelters to build a better network to find space and facilitate transfers like the one that that saved Big Handsome and brought him to MaxFund until he is adopted to his forever home.

The Colorado Rescue Act, put forward by No Kill Colorado, MaxFund, and several other shelters in the state of Colorado, was meant to facilitate this sort of communication among Colorado animal rescues and establish a common network rather than a few isolated lists and phone calls between shelters. Failing health, dangerous behavior, and animal control mandates are examples of reasons that some animals are euthanized in shelters, but it is an unnecessary shame to end the lives of healthy and treatable animals when full shelters run out of space. A common platform among Colorado's 300+ animal rescues would have given these animals the best chance to be seen and moved if able and thus have a truly complete rescue. It would have meant even more success stories like Big Handsome's.

The Colorado Rescue Act did not make it into law this year. While we knew that asking for increased transparency in euthanasia with a bill of this kind would prove difficult, we dove in anyway and started the conversation. Next year, MaxFund and our partners in No Kill will be using what we've learned to continue to forward the mission, to keep healthy animals off kill lists and give them all the best opportunities possible no matter what Colorado shelter they land in.

Please find more information at:
www.nokillcolorado.org/colorado-rescue-act
www.nokillcolorado.org/letterwriting

Bill: The Young Cat Who Refused to Give Up

HOW MAXFUND VETERINARY CLINIC'S MEDICAL TEAM CHANGED THE NARRATIVE

Bill has been a major case here at MaxFund. His story, and his uniquely dire medical situation, proved to be no match to the esteemed medical professionals at MaxFund Veterinary Clinic. With their care and his perserverance, the unthinkable became reality.

After exhibiting symptoms of serious illness, MaxFund vets were able to test and determine his severe need for the removal of a diseased kidney. "We didn't know if he was going to make it through," noted a member of the medical team.

Bill, a very young cat, was set to undergo an emergency, high-risk, and life-saving surgery that would have placed him on a euthanasia list at other shelters. MaxFund's medical team was informed that he may not survive the procedure, but knew they had to take the chance to save his life.

We're thrilled to announce that bill has been a champion-- He's healing well and exploring, just days after the kidney removal! He's on his way to a full recovery, to become a perfectly healthy, happy kitty.

Shelly Raber, MaxFund's Cat Foster Coordinator, was both astonished and supportive:

"I always think of "Eye of the Tiger" from Rocky, when I'm with Bill. The little guy was not leaving this world, and he wanted everyone to know it...He has so much love to give and he adores receiving love, too!" She said.

Bill is a shining example of the many injured, sick, or medically complex animals that MaxFund take in and treat, who would be euthanized at a different, non No Kill shelter. Here, extensive medical costs are secondary to the animals' well-being, and covered by our organization's network of thoughtful donors.

"Animals teach us so much, and [Bill] certainly teaches us to live life with gusto." -Shelly Raber

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Donate to MaxFund today by visiting our donation page, social media @maxfundanimalshelter, or calling

720-726-4552 for more information on how to contribute.
Do You Have A Snow-Dog?

DO YOU HAVE A "SNOW-DOG?

As we move through the heart of the winter months and start hoping for spring, it is worth taking a moment to appreciate the different experiences of our pets in the colder season. Just as some of us enjoy winter more than others, some of our dogs love the snowy time of year. More than just cold weather, it is snow that is special for some dogs, and now is the season for "snow-dogs"!

Winter with pets is often more work, but I think most of us enjoy the special extras we get this time of year with our pets. For the final few days of winter, let's celebrate how much we love snow-dogs! It may be impossible to suppress your smile when a big, fluffy, cold-weather dog has found the perfect spot to lounge in the snow. In their preferred element, they reach a calm contentment and happily refuse to come back inside. While we freeze and plead that it is time to go in, they are the most peaceful kind of stubborn. We bear the cold and let them lie in the snow a little longer and enjoy their moment. For other snow-dogs lounging is not an option. They are invigorated and must play in fresh snow.

Playing fetch now includes bounding, dolphin-leaps through the deep stuff and snowy snoots from poking their heads into layers of fresh snow. For some dogs just running and rolling through the snow provides a unique kind of joy. Snow-rollies and bouncy, white zoomies are a different kind of fun than summer playtime. Wet paw prints on the floor are a small price to pay for a happy, pouncy play session in the snow. Not all dogs have to be snow-dogs to make the most of winter days.

Plenty of dogs are happy to stay inside and cuddle on the cold days, and few things make a cold winter day better than a pup snuggled on the blanket with you. Most dogs seem to know how irresistibly cute they are in a sweater for walks on chilly days, even if it is an alternative walk through a warm pet-friendly store. Dogs that don't even like the cold sometimes cannot resist the urge to chomp on snow as a special snack. We make the most of the winter days with any dog, but it certainly is special when our dogs love the snow.

At MaxFund we always make sure our dogs stay warm and happy all winter, but we also love letting our snow-dogs get the most they can from winter days. Spring is right around the corner. We hope everyone had a great winter. We are all looking forward to doggy hikes and sunny days in the park, but we should make sure we enjoy our remaining winter days with our dogs who love the white stuff. Let us embrace the extra bundling up for cold potty breaks and mopping snowy pawprints off the wet floors.

Here's one last cheer for the snow-dogs!

Setting You and Your Cat Up For Success Following Surgery

SETTING YOU AND YOUR CAT UP FOR SUCCESS FOLLOWING SURGERY

Frodo, our 10-year old boy cat, had knee surgery (patellar luxation) last fall. He made a full recovery and is back to jumping up on his favorite perch. His recovery required residing in a confined space for six weeks. Frodo is very active and sleeps with me at night. I thought keeping him confined would be torture for both of us - it actually went quite smoothly.

Here are a few lessons, some I learned the hard way, on navigating the recovery process.

Confined Space
I chose the Jespet Soft-Sided 61" Playpen – quickly dubbed The Condo - for his confinement. It was large enough for me to climb inside and hang out with him. He had plenty of room for bedding, a feeding station, and litter pan. Both the bottom and the top zipped closed completely and two zippered doors made feeding and clean-up easy. Lesson learned - I set it up in our living room two weeks prior to his surgery, so he had time to get used to it. He hung out in it often and napping there became part of his daily routine. Allowing him time to accept a new space made coming home to being confined a bit more familiar.

Litter Pans
Litter pan height must be less than two inches for cats recovering from knee surgery. I purchased disposable foil baking trays to use as litter pans. These pans were shallow and easy to throw away after a few uses - convenient for a busy pet parent. An affordable option would be a shallow litter pan or reusable/washable plastic container. Lesson learned - Line the entire confinement area with waterproof pads. Initially I had a towel underneath the pan, which immediately soaked through as groggy Frodo completely missed the pan on the first attempt. A speed run to PetSmart and 20 minutes later, the condo was lined with waterproof pads. They also worked well under the feeding station area, as he knocked over his water bowl frequently during the cone wearing phase.

Rest and Recovery
I thought Frodo would be upset being confined and lonely sleeping alone at night. He was not. I believe he instinctually knew being in his condo was best for him. He slept non-stop most of the first two weeks. In the evenings I would unzip one of the doors and sit with him. After 30 minutes or so, he would start to nudge around me, trying to escape. I learned to limit time with the door open to shorter increments. He received the right balance of love and affection without becoming frustrated by his lack of freedom. Lesson learned – Our pets know they need extra sleep to recover. My initial idea of sleeping in the condo with him, because he would be lonely, was way off base. He needed his sleep and so did I.

Take Cues from Your Cat
The first two weeks were all about caretaking. Limitations of wearing a cone created eating challenges, tipped water bowls, and missed litter box attempts. Halfway through the recovery period, I started sliding his condo over to our bay window during the day. Looking outside provided much needed normalcy. I spent more time in the living room, as he became increasingly interested in activities going on around him. Towards the end of the six-week mark, I replaced the litter pan with his own, bigger box. His sister came in for a few quick visits. At six weeks, he received the all-clear and could move about with supervision. I left the condo up, with the doors open. For the first couple weeks, he slept in it at night. He continued to take daily naps in it, sensing it was a healing space. When he stopped going into it, I put it away. Lesson learned - Recovery went differently, smoother, than I thought it would. Frodo's understanding of what he needed to heal, and his ability to communicate it to me, allowed me to pivot, taking my cues from him. Not only was his surgery a success, his recovery was, too.

Help MaxFund Save Abandoned Animals! Glory's Recovery Story

Just Scan to Donate--Every Dollar Counts!

"The Greatest Glory"

While America was home, spending time with their loved ones, polishing off their Thanksgiving leftovers, and keeping warm during the blustery tail-end of November, a stray, 3-year-old, Husky had been struck by a car in Brush, CO and left for dead. Thankfully, she was found by the Brush Police Department and brought to the closest veterinary clinic to assess the damage done to her body.

Her x-rays were bad; both hips were fractured, with one even out of the socket. Surgery was imminent for Glory to regain the full functionality of her legs, and to stop any infection she may have had from spreading to other parts of her body.

MaxFund was contacted by Brush County, one of our rural rescue partners, and asked us to take her in and help her. MaxFund gladly accepted this challenge. She arrived at the shelter with a police escort, and already had the perfect name- Glory! Knowing of her injuries ahead of time, we expected Glory to be carried in, but to our surprise, Glory (not so gracefully) pranced through our front doors. She did not look like a dog who would require major surgery. She had a happy smile, and a "ready to go" attitude! Though in obvious pain and in need of surgery, Glory was quick to ingratiate herself with us and constantly offer sweet, gentle kisses to everyone. With the eyes and ears of a Husky and soft, fluffy fur the color of sunshine, Glory truly is a one-in-a-million dog.

"The greater the effort, the greater the glory." - Pierre Corneille

Glory's operation was completed, with both her hips repaired. Needing immediate foster care, one of our volunteers stepped in to be her Foster. Glory spent several weeks being pampered at her foster home, receiving massages, sleeping on her orthopedic mattress, and building up her stamina and strength. She received physical therapy and enrichment puzzles to keep her mind engaged while she was on strict restriction. With the Foster's work requirements changing, Glory has found her way back to MaxFund, where she is still getting laser therapy, physical therapy, and plenty of love & attention every day. We are certain that she will be someone's best friend for many years to come once she has passed this bump in the road. This would have been an impossible achievement without our donors. We are so grateful for those who support our mission.

Glory has become a symbol of MaxFund's commitment to ensuring every animal that comes into our care is provided with gold-standard veterinary care and the love and compassion they deserve. Like any injured dog who arrives at MaxFund, Glory's recovery is our top priority. Her recovery is a communal effort that depends on help from kennel staff, fosters, medical staff, and donors who support the costs of her care. If you believe in the MaxFund mission, we invite and welcome your contribution so we can keep giving dogs like Glory a second chance at life. With your help, Glory, and the many dogs who will come after her, will be able to stand tall and walk free for many years to come.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Donate to MaxFund today by visiting our donation page, social media @maxfundanimalshelter, or calling

720-726-4552 for more information on how to contribute.
