One of the greatest privileges of our Peace of Mind Pet Guardianship Program is fulfilling the promises people make to the animals they love.
Recently, we welcomed Big Guy and Blue Eyes into our care following the passing of their beloved owner, Tony.
Tony was an engineer, an avid rock climber, and a lifelong animal lover. Even later in life, he remained active and enjoyed riding his electric bike, tending to the flowers and bird feeders on his patio, and spending quiet days at home with his cats.
Big Guy came into Tony’s life first. Because Tony traveled to England several times a year to visit family, he later welcomed Blue Eyes to keep Big Guy company while he was away. Blue Eyes has known Big Guy for nearly her entire life, and the two developed an especially close bond.
Big Guy, an outgoing orange tabby, is playful, affectionate, and quick to make new friends. Blue Eyes, his gentle gray companion, is more cautious and prefers to take things at her own pace. She often watches Big Guy for reassurance, following his lead when deciding whether a new person or situation is safe. He is the confident big brother, and she is the quieter little sister who is rarely far behind.
Their longtime pet sitter, Chrystal, cared for them in Tony’s home for approximately seven years. She remembers the peaceful life they shared in his quiet townhouse, where the cats had plenty of comfortable couches, recliners, and even Tony’s king-sized bed to choose from. Their days were often accompanied by conversation from NPR, podcasts, or familiar television shows playing softly in the background.
As Tony’s health declined, he carefully planned for the cats’ future. In addition to enrolling in our
Peace of Mind Pet Guardianship Program, he named Chrystal as their temporary caregiver so they would have someone familiar looking after them until they could safely transition into our care. Most importantly, Tony made it clear that he wanted Big Guy and Blue Eyes to remain together.
Because he planned ahead, Tony knew they would have a safe place to land if he could no longer care for them.
After arriving at True Companions, Big Guy quickly became a favorite among our staff and volunteers, while Blue Eyes has been gaining confidence each day, often taking her cues from her brave companion.
Just as Tony wished, Big Guy and Blue Eyes will be adopted together into a loving home where they can begin their next chapter side by side. We will look for a family that understands their bond and can offer them the peaceful, comfortable environment they have always known.
Programs like Peace of Mind are about much more than planning ahead. They provide comfort to pet owners by assuring them that the animals they cherish will continue to be known, protected, and loved when they can no longer provide that care themselves.
Tony’s kindness and foresight gave Big Guy and Blue Eyes that gift. We are honored to keep his promise and help carry his legacy forward.
