Pet Safety and Accident Prevention: Our Expert Tips

It’s summertime again in Denver, which means things are getting hotter and less safe for your pet. The outdoors, usually hospitable to your pet’s needs, becomes a hazardous place without the correct preparation from pet owners. Check out our blog below on our best Pet Summer Safety tips to keep your True Companions healthy and happy in the heat.

1. Never leave your pet unattended in a car

This one feels obvious, but you’d be surprised to know it’s more common than you think. Even if it’s winter, refrain from leaving your pet unattended in a parked car. You may think this is a safe option, but it’s not. It causes your pet stress, and in the summer, has the potential to be a fatal decision. Think twice!

2. The 7-second rule

Did you know asphalt and concrete retain heat? This means when the sun is beaming down on roads and sidewalks, they get much warmer than grassy areas. Now, imagine stepping on a scorching hot road, barefoot. Unpleasant at minimum! Your dog doesn’t enjoy it either. In fact, dogs are capable of getting burns from hot pavement. To prevent your dog from getting hurt, place the back of your hand on pavement you’re considering traveling on top of. If you can stand the heat for 7 seconds or more, it should be safe enough for your dog to walk on.

3. Consider continued prevention

We know how scary it can be to feel helpless when your pet experiences an emergency. Disasters can happen in an instant and are sometimes preventable. Consider taking one of our K9 CPR classes at the beginning of August to better prepare for and prevent injury or accident. Can’t attend one of the two classes we’re offering? Stay tuned for a self-guided online course, linked here when it’s live!

4. Wildfire season, allergy season

Colorado has seen an increase in wildfires, spreading across the western part of the state rapidly this season. With wildfire season, comes worsening air quality, and increased allergies for you and your pet. Your pet may experience things like increased production of eye mucus, running nose, and other cold-like symptoms due to the fire conditions. Consider investing in an air purifier for your home to give your pet, and yourself, some relief. Apply a warm compress to dried mucus or eye secretions to loosen them and comfort your pet. If your pet experiences more serious symptoms, contact True Companions Vet Clinic.
